Digital Boomerang Systems Records and Feats

Disclaimer:  Now that I have attended an actual USBA Tournament (2003 National Championships), it is almost embarrassing to present these records and feats here. I have seen what the experts are capable of and it nearly makes this list seem silly. But in the context of my family and friends throwing together and having fun, I am still proud to present our "Records and Feats". I may eventually change this to a "Personal Bests" list.

These are the known records and feats that have been accomplished using Digital Boomerang Systems boomerangs. If you know of any others, please report them to me. Now includes Junior Division Records and "Feats".

Most medals won in a USBA tournament using DBS boomerangs. 12 Andrew "Ace" Armstrong JugglerBoom2_web.jpg (49248 bytes) Ace won every event that he entered in the Junior and Novice categories. He forgot to pick up his Trick Catch medals, so he should actually have 14.  Also see this photo gallery of the tournament.

Consecutive Catches (2 hands)

Nerve-wracking.
Consecutive Catches (2 hands) with a left-handed boomerang thrown with right hand 21 Bruce Armstrong Woodsaver-Boom-Medium-Mirrored.jpg (38324 bytes) Pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

Andrew Tauhert

Tauhert_Pink-Boom_web.jpg (38743 bytes) If you know what this guy's hands look like, you wonder how he could ever miss catching the boomerang.

Consecutive 1-Handed Catches (Opposite hand)

11

Andrew Tauhert

Tauhert_Pink-Boom_web.jpg (38743 bytes)

If you throw with your right hand, you have to catch it with your left.

Consecutive No-Step One-Handed Catches

3

Andrew Tauhert

Tauhert_V-Boom_web.jpg (26990 bytes)

Not only are his fingers long, but so are his arms and legs. His "no-step" range is way better than most people's. (I should also note that he throws well.)

5 throws and catches as fast as you can. Click here for detailed rules.

My non-weighted MTA model made from plans from a book. See the gallery for what MTA is all about.
Most consecutive attempts to catch a boomerang in your mouth. 1 Wayne Pilip

Juggling

Twin-Boomerangs.jpg (41996 bytes)

October 19th, 2002. This wore me OUT! I'd better get all these records I want before I get old overnight. (old record: 7)

Now that I've seen juggling performed with specialized, slow-hovering boomerangs, it looks way easier than using these 50 meter models. I plan an assault on this personal best soon.

Doubling

1.5

Bruce Armstrong

<photo coming soon>

Two boomerangs thrown simultaneously. It helps if the two have significantly different flight diameters so they separate and don't crash into each other.

I have lately learned that "Doubling" requires trick catches, so this may need moved to the new "Feats" section instead.

I have now seen real "Doubling" and at a USBA tournament, and I now see that this will be much easier with some specialized boomerangs.

Having 2 in air and catching both

5 (10?)

Bruce Armstrong

JugglerBooms_both_web.jpg (82020 bytes) This is different than juggling or "Doubling".

5 catches of each before a drop for a total of 10 catches.

Consecutive Trick Catches

3

Chris Meek

<photo coming soon>

Behind-the-back (two-hands) catches.

1 finger catches (3-blader)

8

Justin Taylor

Cam_boom.jpg (40943 bytes)

Not a photo of the actual boomerang used, because Justin has it. (I hope he still has it.)

Long Distance

Not measured yet, but Meek and I each have awesome contenders for this category.

If you throw with your right hand, you have to catch it with your left.

Ace throws with his right and catches with his left.

Feats

A "feat" is defined thusly:

  1. A notable act or deed, especially an act of courage; an exploit.
  2. An act of skill, endurance, imagination, or strength; an achievement.

We might like to think catching a boomerang on your head is an act of courage, but definition 2 is probably more accurate for this list.

Throw 2 nearly-identical boomerangs simultaneously and catch one in each hand.

Two just like this

Very impressive feat from the young lad!

Same as "doubling" with 2 trick catches, but without specialized boomerangs. Much more difficult as these two boomerangs are coming in in very quick succession.

Throw 3 boomerangs in rapid succession, having all 3 in the air simultaneously, and catch them all.

Bruce Armstrong

Twin-Boomerangs.jpg (41996 bytes)
and one more that I can't recall
I had been trying three-in-the-air-at-once for quite a while, and I finally caught all 3 in February 2003.

(sure wish I had dates for all these records and feats)

Cartwheel Catch: Throw the boomerang, do a cartwheel, then catch the boomerang.

Holly Armstrong

5/26/2003

Woodsaver-Boom-Medium.jpg (41207 bytes) She has this down pretty good now.
Duo Sandwich Catch: Two people perform a sandwich catch, one person's hand on bottom, and another person's hand on top.

Ace and Bruce Armstrong

Woodsaver-Boom-Smallest.jpg (28747 bytes) Harder than you might think. It took us several tries to get it right.

3-Bladers are way easier.
Throw a left-handed boomerang with your left hand and catch it. (Right-hander's only)

Bruce Armstrong

Woodsaver-Boom-Medium-Mirrored.jpg (41188 bytes) Very awkward. I was told I appeared to "throw like a girl".
Scissor Catch: Hold your index and middle fingers like a pair of scissors and catch the boomerang between them. Bruce, Andrew, and Holly Woodsaver-Boom-Smallest.jpg (28747 bytes) Use a small, lightweight boomerang and be careful.
Throw a right-handed boomerang with your left hand and catch it. (Right-hander's only)

Our new doublers and a Carlota. Tough to stay out of each others' way. Fun variation on Suicide. We did this trick lots of times.
